Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

There was no party in which the Congrega with its red silk "mozzette" was not in the front row.

We are now in the "new" part of the village. New because it developed later than the middle-aged historical centre Also "new" because the people of Pisciotta considered it a focus of aggregation for the simple folk whereas the Mother Curch and the Assunta Chapel gathered the nobility and erudites. The origins are still not quite clear. It seems that its foundation goes back to earlier than 1600 and it then was called Chapel of Annunciation (or Purity). While there was a pastoral visit (1686),in a precious report for the history of these places, this holy building is praised for the skill and elegance by which it was built. It is not a case that Carmine's Church "jus patronato" of the people is entrusted to the mastery of carpenters, bricklayers, blacksmiths and farmers. It was entrusted to and supported by the craftsmen called "ignobili" (not nobles) not well tolerated by the noblemen of the village who were rich and always entangled with ecclesiastical careers by birthright. So the congregation of St. Mary's of the Carmine is gathered around the church and their members are engaged in supporting the expenses for repairs, getting donations and all the necessary for the maintenance. Going on Carmine's Church gets more and more important for the community and acquires several functions which formerly were done by the Mother Church. Nowadays it is still important for most of the religious ceremonies excepting the most important functions which require more space and the solemnity of the Mother Church.
The attachment of Pisciotta's inhabitants to this sacred place is evident considering their donations, many of them now far away and citizens of other nations, but continuing generation after generation.
