Alleys and lanes

Tortuos, steep and narrow and trampled by infinite different feet.

Pisciotta still maintains its historical center nearly unchanged and although being a small village you will be surprised by the labyrinth of alleys, lanes and blind alleys the visitor will find.
Throughout the Middle ages it was important to build the villages with narrow alleys to protect themselves. In case of attacks the enemy could be controlled when coming through the narrow streets and becoming victims of the things that would be thrown out of the windows and balconies. On the other hand many alleys were blind and the den for mob and dirty business as well as clandestine meetings.
Nowadays it's not necessary to defend ourselves from armed enemies, but the narrow alleys protect us against weather agents, first of all the heat. Walking through via Roma - before via Serra- and all the small lanes winding through the buildings, you will feel fresh air even there is no wind. This is very refreshing and there is also a cool shadow
Walking through the web of alleys means as well to change perspective. Imagine to watch the barons of the Mansion together with the entourage of rich noblemen walking down via Serra and to the Mother Church. Then we go into the characteristic alleys and discover by chance wineries, shops, oil mills, orchards and gardens belonging to the houses witnessing a daily industriousness implicit in historical stories but never taken for granted for the village life.
Accompanied by ufresh air, walking through the alleys and pleasantly bewildered, suddenly green hills, blue sea. All this was experienced by others and will be in future.
